Hannah Walker Unlocks Tourism Career with TAFE NSW Qualification

TAFE NSW tourism student Hannah Walker has some exciting times ahead as communities prepare for pandemic-related restrictions to lift.

She is only 18 years old and already Hannah has fast-tracked her career by studying Certificate III Tourism with TAFE NSW, meaning she will be job-ready when she finishes year 12. Her TAFE NSW qualification led to an early entry university offer where she will either study tourism, occupational therapy, or both. To top it off she was recently named NSW Training Awards School Based Trainee, People’s Choice Finalist.

“I was always intrigued as to how tourism, travel, and events worked behind the scenes, so I took the opportunity to study tourism with TAFE NSW while I was still at school,” she said.

As part of her TAFE NSW training, she took part in a school-based traineeship with Coolamon Shire Council where she secured part-time employment.

“I love meeting new people and I’m an interactive learner who enjoys hands-on work. This course and my school-based traineeship with council has meant I’ve been able to explore life in the workforce and specifically the tourism industry.

COVID-19 has presented Hannah with plenty of challenges from home-based schooling to almost having her work placement cancelled. She said it was difficult to keep going at times, but she used her initiative to find ways to meet assessment tasks and was able to keep working and studying.

“This training has given me some specific skills and general workplace knowledge early in life.

“I’m excited about what the future holds,” Hannah said.

TAFE NSW Teacher Jeanne Parker said Hannah’s experience was a good example of how school students can give themselves the best chance at the career of their dreams.

“By enrolling in a TAFE NSW course while they are still at school, students gain practical skills, work experience, and graduate with a nationally recognised qualification on top of their HSC. Those industry specific skills and experience, combined with the workplace connections can put a person ahead of the pack when it comes to job interviews,” Ms Parker said.

“Our Certificate III in Tourism students learn from industry experienced teachers who are passionate about this exciting and diverse sector. Students learn the skills and knowledge to become a booking agent, tour coordinator or sales support. It’s a solid foundation to start a career in the tourism industry.”
